5 Questions to Identify a Lumbar Disc Injury

Have you or anyone you know ever suffered from a severe, or recurrent episode of lower back pain? Chances are you have. Do not worry you are not alone. Some research has suggested that 80% of people experience back pain in their lives, 50% have had back pain in the last year, and 33% of people have had back pain in the last 3 months!

That’s a whole lot of people with back pain! DO NOT WORRY! Most back pain is mild, self limiting and resolves on its own. HOWEVER, if you are a person who regularly has their back go “out”, OR you have been treated consistently for back pain without lasting results, it maybe time to reexamine your injury/treatment.

One of the MOST COMMON causes for acute and chronic lower back pain is a lumbar disc bulge/herniation. These words are often scary to hear because there are a lot of negative connotations associated with receiving a diagnosis of a disc injury. Again DO NOT WORRY because discs can heal! Let me say that again discs can heal! HOWEVER just like any other injury you need to know how to properly manage them.

It’s important to note that before a diagnosis of a disc injury can be made consult your local health care professional for advice/examination

Here are 5 questions to ask yourself when it comes to identifying your own lumbar disc injury, and deciding if you need to seek professional care/advice.

  1. Do you have a prior history of a lifting injury to your lower back?
  2. Have you ever experienced sciatica?
  3. Does your back reliably hurt in the morning?
  4. Are transitional movements painful? (up/down from a chair, in/out of a car, rolling over in bed)
  5. Do you have a history of a “locked” back or a history of your back going “out”?
