Whiplash Injuries

As the weather starts to turn and the roads get icy, regrettably we see an increase in car accidents. So let’s talk about Whiplash and some of the after effects from motor vehicle accidents.

Car accidents, even minor ones, can cause a lot of added stress with personal finances, inconveniences, paperwork, and health. We are here to help you with your health!

What is whiplash?

Whiplash is a term used to describe a variety of neck and head injuries that result from an acceleration-deceleration mechanism of injury. Huh? Typically during a rear-end accident the head is rapidly forced backwards (into the head-rest) then forwards causing the cervical spine to go into hyperextension followed by hyperflexion. This occurs during most car accidents and particularly during a rear end collision, however whiplash can occur from an impact in all directions even at low speeds.

The most common complaints following a car accident are:

  • Neck and lower back pain
  • Muscle stiffness and decreased range of motion
  • Shoulder pain and stiffness
  • Headaches
  • Pain in the jaw
  • Arm tingling and weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Concussion symptoms

Most whiplash symptoms begin within 24 hours of the injury, however in some instances the symptoms may not surface until 5-14 days following impact.

What are your options?

Fortunately you are medically covered through ICBC for Chiropractic, Massage, Physiotherapy, and Kinesiology. Whiplash causes pain and tenderness of the muscles, joints and ligaments throughout the spine which can be treated through soft tissue work and adjustments. Whiplash also causes changes in posture and muscle imbalances which can be treated through exercise prescription and active care guided by your healthcare profession.

If you or someone you know gets into a car accident whether you are at fault or not you are entitled to health coverage through ICBC. Here are instructions on how to report a claim https://www.icbc.com/claims/report-view/Pages/Report-a-claim-online.aspx
